Description

This is Samantha, the first car I ever named (at my then girlfriend's insistence). This picture was taken on McTavish just South of Avenue des Pins, and the background is where I went to university. Samantha was a 1987 Brazilian made Volkswagen Fox 1.8 litre with the Canadian Bosch CIS fuel injection system. She had a header, indexed platinum plugs with a bigger breather, Bosch über-coil and shielded wires, Pirelli P77 tires and a few other tiny tweeks that made her a lot faster than a stock 1989 Firebird with a 350 cu in (5.7 L) Tuned Port Injection V8, I drove one of my co-workers insane when his new Firebird couldn't keep up with me. She was a joy to drive at 800kg with a very long second gear and lots of torque, I estimate she made somewhere between 100 to 110 HP. I once spun the front wheels at 70km/h in third gear, a very stupid thing to do which I never repeated. Very nimble in city traffic and able to cruse at 150km/h without effort (though fuel consumption suffered), she didn't handle very well at high speeds. I once got her to 185km/h but backed down despite her willingness to keep going, I was finding the steering much too light for my tastes! The custom paintjob was by Cartistics, a Montreal based customizer which made her absolutely unique, the only navy blue Fox they painted in this scheme (they did a red one and a white one I believe). The insurance company refused to cover the paintjob, citing it was not repairable; thankfully I never needed to have it touched up.
I loved this car so much that when my brand new 1991 Jetta TD was stolen I bought a 1991 Fox; by then it had gained 200kg and gotten the US spec Digifiant FI that made a lot less HP. As much as I loved the first car I really hated my second Fox and got rid of it within a very short time.

Two more stories about this car: I once toured the Maritimes (Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) in this car with my two teenage sisters and a friend. It took about 1/2 an hour to load the trunk every morning, I had never realized up until then how much luggage three girls "needed" for two weeks on the road. The day we left, we had to stop at a speed shop and have rubber "NASCAR" wedges inserted in the rear springs because the tires would rub inside the wheel well every time we hit a bump, the P77s were too wide for the wells. We had a blast though.
Second story, my buddy Eric was demolitions engineer in the Canadian Armed Forces and whenever he came to town we would go out partying. One evening we picked up 5 young ladies and somehow convinced them them to come back to my apartment with us. We sat them in the back three across, one lying on their laps, and one sitting on Eric's lap. I may have a picture somewhere taken in the parking garage at my apartment building. Today we would all be thrown in jail for such a stunt but back then the police weren't so strict about seatbelts. Ah, to be young and stupid again. :-)
